646f9e108c After the One Year War and subsequent wars with the last remnants of the Principality of Zeon, the Earth Federation formed a special military force to prevent space colonies from revolting against the Federation. Thus, the Titans were born. Eight years have passed since the end of the One Year War and now the tables have turned. The once good Earth Federation is now more corrupt than ever and will turn the other way even when its special force, the Titans, commit atrocities like gassing millions of civilians to their deaths. Because of this abuse of authority the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) is formed from the breaking off of many Federation politicians and military who oppose the Titans, and they will ally with former members of the Principality of Zeon, who dislike the oppression and tyranny towards the space colonies. This where the story begins. Many heroes from the One Year War, like Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, Bright Noa, Hayato Kobayashi, and Quattro Bajeena (Char Aznable),wellnew heroes (Camille Vidan, Emma Sheen, Katz Kobayashi) will fight the Titans' Bask Ohm, Jerid Mesa, Paptimus Scirocco and Yazan Gable, and the Axis' (former Zeon) Haman Kahn, to see who will win the war to end tyranny. Eight years after the One Year War, the Earth Federation creates an elite force called the Titans to hunt Zeon remnants. When Titans proves to be no better than Zeon, the Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG) is formed to restore peace in space. Zeta Gundam is by far one of the best Mecha shows ever. It has all the requisites of a good mecha. It has amazing battle scenes, superb character development, and a clear distinction between the heroes and the villains with us being totally against the Titans (with the exception of a few Titan pilots like Four Murasme and Rosamia Badam) and cheering the heroes, like Kamille (something that the original gundam lacked, with me feeling sorry for the Zeon soldiers, like Ramba Ral). Most of the characters in the original (with the exception of Char and Bright Noah who are main characters in the AEUG, and Katx who is an AEUG soldier) Gundam make cameo appearances here.

On the down side, the show starts a little poorly (although I was a fan of the original Gundam, and looked forward a lot to Z Gundam, I almost stopped watching it because of the first couple of episodes), the later episodes are some of the best mecha episodes that I have ever watched. The opening music was also very good, but the ending theme could have been a little better. The animation is also a little old, and it could do with a little restoration.

On the whole, I would say that the show is one of the best anime ever made. Heroes from Zeta Gundam like Quattro Bageena (a.k.a. Char Aznable from the original Gundam series), Kamille Bidan, Emma Sheen, wellvillains like Jerid Messa, Paptimus Scirocco, and Haman Karn are some of the best anime characters ever developed. The original Gundam show was a fairly entertaining show in of itself and in starting the Gundam franchise in earnest it did anime an enormous favour. The ride hasn't always been smooth either for Tomino the director or for those of us disappointed at the few flops in amongst this metaseries made up almost entirely of mediocre, good and sometimes masterpiece titles. Zeta Gundam is one of these masterpieces.

Anybody who's seen the original Gundam won't find it hard to point out why Zeta is even better and by a fair bit too; while Mobile Suit Gundam happened mainly on Earth Zeta happens mainly in space which works far better on an artistic level due to the very mechanics of the whole setting and medium; even now animation can't quite make Earth look on TV the way it looks in reality but space is for the most part blackness with a few white dots here and there and the occasional planet, asteroid, black hole, satellite, space colony and whatever else so it's much easier to make it look convincing and suspension of disbelief is a lot easier for the viewer to pull off when there isn't much disbelief to suspend; this goes without saying. Another factor is it does beginyour usual 1 v 1 conflict but then another party enters (although if they wanted to bloody both sides they should have entered the war when it began and if they wanted the best conditions for invading Earth they should have waited until the war had ended and then they would not only have surprise but would be unbloodied) and that makes things far more interesting. One gripe I have about the original Gundam is that the tension is nearly all false; of course a Newtype with a Gundam is going to defeat even an experienced ace but when there's 2 enemies with psychic powers to fight while your side is being hit by 2 enemy forces at the same time, now that is tension at its very best. Another reason and this is more subjective is the fact that purple is my favourite colour and the greater use of purple or similar colours is a feast for the eyes. The music is even better whether it be one of the best and most archetypal military songs ever Zeta's Pulse or the soothing English opening or 2nd Japanese opening you will hear some excellent songs. Finallyusual the Japanese dub is fine but the English dub is excellent with the dark nature of this series (where a teenage boy literally loses his mind and most of the main cast are killed in the final few episodes plus a defection) reflected in the cold qualities of Haman's and Kamille's voices, cold but also nice like the winter's air at daybreak.
